Has a dark stain just appeared on your ceiling? You probably have a leak in your roof. Before launching into repairing your roof, protect your furniture and collect the water coming through in a container.

LOCATE THE LEAK

Before starting to repair your roof, it is important to work out what has caused the leak. Where is water getting in? Is it localised? It may be helpful to climb on the roof to inspect the tiles. You can also view the roof from inside the loft.

The water is not necessarily entering at the point where you can see it. It may be running along a beam or a wall.

CAUSES OF A LEAKY ROOF

There are many possible causes for a leaky roof:

  • Wear: broken or slipped tiles and blocked gutters represent a risk to the impermeability of your roof,
  • Installation: a poorly fitted roof can cause leaks,
  • Weather conditions: in some regions, rain or snow can quickly cause damage to a roof.

WHICH MATERIALS SHOULD YOU USE TO REPAIR YOUR ROOF?

If leaks have caused significant damage, take the opportunity to replace your roof completely. There are many options for a new roof: imitation tile panels, corrugated or bituminous roof panels…

Some products have warranties of up to 10 years for a high-performance, long-life solution.

Applying a roof underlayment is also a good idea if you do not already have one. Its primary function is to keep water out of the home.

If you want to preserve the appearance of your existing roof, choose a bituminous underlayment (such as Isoline ) for a long-term solution (30-year warranty) that will eliminate any risk of leaks due to broken or slipped tiles.

A point that is often overlooked but can cause huge damage is the area around the chimney, where water can easily penetrate. A self-adhesive flashing strip  is enough to isolate the chimney.

Don't hesitate to consult a professional, who can advise you on the most appropriate products for your home.

MAINTENANCE: PREVENTING LEAKS AND KEEPING YOUR ROOF WATERPROOF

To limit repairs and roofing work, regular maintenance is important. Make sure there are no leaves or other residues clinging to your roof. The space where the tiles fit together must remain clear and rainwater must be able to flow unimpeded towards the gutter.

REPAIRING YOUR ROOF YOURSELF: OUR ADVICE

The best way to repair a roof is to call in a professional.

But if you want to carry out repairs yourself, here are a few tips:

  • Be careful on scaffolding. Equip yourself with a harness, appropriate footwear, knee pads and a roof ladder.
  • During the repairs on your roof, it is important to use a protective tarpaulin. This is used as a temporary covering to avoid water entering during the work. Put it on at the end of every day, even if the weather is good!
  • Work zone by zone. Never uncover the whole roof at the same time. It is important to proceed area by area.
